Next Day Courier Service: Our Most Frequently Asked Questions

Next day courier services are shaping a smarter approach to last-mile logistics. They give businesses a reliable way to reduce delivery costs nationwide, while still reaching destinations that aren’t always practical for same day delivery.

That said, delivery networks can feel complex, with many moving parts and constant changes. To make things clearer, we’ve answered some of the most frequently asked questions about next day delivery to help guide you through how it all works.

What is the difference between a next day courier and a same day courier?

A common question we receive is about the difference between next day and same day courier services.

Next day courier services can be more restrictive when it comes to what you’re able to send. Items such as jewellery, furniture, exposed metals, flammable goods, aerosols, liquids and glass are typically not permitted. This is because most overnight networks rely on large sorting and distribution hubs that handle a very high volume of parcels each day. As parcels move through these automated networks, extremely fragile or delicate items may be at risk of damage.

To avoid disappointment, we restrict these items from our overnight network and generally advise against sending fragile goods via next day services.

If you’re shipping delicate or high-value items, our same day courier service is a better option. With same day delivery, each consignment is handled individually, and our drivers follow specific instructions to ensure your items are transported and delivered exactly as required.

How do I know which service is better for me?

If you’re not sure which service is right for your delivery, there are a few simple things to consider before booking. We recommend keeping the following in mind:

  • Large or bulky consignments are usually better suited to same day delivery

  • Documents or small–medium, non-urgent items are ideal for next day delivery

  • If your delivery includes a restricted item, check whether it can be transported via same day delivery

  • If cost is your main priority, remember: next day delivery is typically priced by weight, while same day delivery is usually priced by distance (along with vehicle type and other factors)

In short, if your item isn’t urgent and isn’t oversized, next day delivery is likely the best choice.

Can I still use live tracking with a next day delivery?

Live tracking is available as standard with eCourier’s same day delivery service. For next day deliveries, tracking works a little differently.

Because next day consignments are collected as part of a planned delivery route, live tracking at the point of collection isn’t always available or accurate. Routes are organised by postcode and area, with collections typically taking place during normal business hours.

In many cases, delivery tracking is available for next day services once the item has been collected. For some consignments (particularly third-party deliveries) you may need to contact our team to request a delivery tracking link. You can also find a full tracking audit in real-time in eCourier’s platform, typically visible once the item has been delivered.

If you’d like to enquire about tracking links or references, please wait until your consignment has been collected before contacting our Next Day & International team.

What are the cutoff times for next day delivery?

Our cut-off times are straightforward:

  • Next day and international services must be booked before 15:00 for same day collection from central London account addresses.

  • Collections are made during business hours, typically 09:00–17:00, Monday to Friday.

  • Collections from outside London are handled as third-party overnight collections and will take place on the next working day after the booking is made.

  • For example:

    • A third-party collection booked before 15:00 on Monday will usually be collected on Tuesday.

    • A booking made after 15:00 on Monday may be collected on Wednesday, and so on.

  • Please allow one to two working days for collections outside London, particularly in rural areas.

If you’re ever unsure about cut-off times or collection dates, you can make a booking over the phone with one of our friendly advisors, who will confirm exactly when your item is due to be collected for complete peace of mind.
